Keeping your lawn looking beautiful all year round in Tampa Bay requires you to invest in a quality sprinkler system. Because many components make up your sprinkler system, the life expectancy will be different for each part.

When you have your sprinkler system first installed or maintained over time, make sure you hire a qualified Florida Certified Contractor to maximize the life expectancy of your investment.

Life expectancy

On average, here is an approximate life expectancy of the different components of a sprinkler system if it is maintained properly:

Sprinkler System – 20 years

Good quality heads – Between 10 to 15 years

Inexpensive heads – 2 or 3 years

Nozzles – Replace after two years depending on water quality and climate

Pipes – Up to 40 years
The pipes are the most durable component of a sprinkler system and will last the longest because they are being shielded from direct sun damage and other external factors being underground.

Wires – replace regularly
One of the components that you may need to replace periodically are the wires, often due to improper installation and corrosion.

Valves – Between 10 to 15 years of service

Controllers – Between 5 to 10 years

Irrigation

Irrigation failures and damage can be the result of many factors, including the age of the landscape and irrigation system, previous repairs, proximity to trees, rodent activity, vandalism, the quality of the irrigation water (reclaimed water, well water, etc.). But perhaps nothing affects the lifespan of your irrigation system more than the quality of installation and components. Here are some mistakes to avoid when installing or upgrading an irrigation and sprinkler system.

An irrigation installation starts with the design and is carried through to the setup of each sprinkler head, the installation of the water pipe, the location of the control valves, and the mounting of the control timer and rain sensor. Even a brand new sprinkler system might need repairs if pipe fittings were not primed or glued correctly, if wires were not spliced correctly, or if lines were not sufficiently flushed with water.

Maintenance

To keep your sprinkler system in good working order and to last a long time, you need regular maintenance on the different components of the system. A maintenance plan can ensure your sprinkler system is running in the smoothest, most energy efficient manner possible, and identify areas where you could conserve water and energy.

Ask your local irrigation contractor what maintenance plans they offer so you can increase your irrigation system’s longevity, reduce your water usage, and maintain an attractive landscape while your lawn and garden stay properly watered throughout the year.
